It’s men’s health month! In June each year, the whole world brings every man into focus and raises awareness of health issues affecting them. It is a small step towards changing the face of “masculinity” and urging men to consider ALL aspects of their health. Mental health is a major part of overall well being and should not be ignored.

The statistics for men’s mental health, in Australia, are grim. One in five men suffer from anxiety. While more than 70% of men with mental health problems do not access support services. Additionally, less than 20% seek consultation about mental health-related issues.

Ayurveda is regarded as “The Science of Life” and the practice involves the care for the physical, mental and spiritual health of human beings. Life according to Ayurveda is a combination of senses, mind, body and soul. Ayurveda is not only limited to body or physical symptoms but also gives a comprehensive outlook on spiritual, mental and social health.

Adopting Ayurvedic lifestyle practices can make big improvements to men’s health and well-being. Here are five easy tips to get started.

1. Improve the quality of sleep

Having a complete sleep cycle is extremely important. Sleep deprivation can increase stress response and be physically exhausting. A good way to get the sleep cycle control is by incorporating a bedtime routine that starts an hour before you actually want to sleep. When ready, put down all electronics, turn off the television, read a book, meditate, try using essential oils and practice Abhyanga (self-massage). When you feel relaxed, let go of the day and close your eyes.

2. Stay hydrated

To encourage the natural flow of the lymph system, it is recommended to drink sips of warm water or hot teas throughout the day. According to Ayurveda, it is best to avoid cold and icy water as it can make it harder for your body to absorb nutrients and properly process food.

3. Follow a sattvic diet

Add more fresh and local foods into your diet and be thoughtful about how you prepare them. Remember that good digestion is important for nutrition, the immune system and can support mental wellness. Eat three easily digestible meals a day and sit down to enjoy each of them.

4. De-stress

Consider starting a regular meditation practice. It can offer incredible benefits to your health. Additionally, any kind of exercise like yoga is a great stress-reliever for both mind and body.

5. Maintain a healthy mind

Another big step in the journey towards better mental health is creating a space where you can find comfort and solace. Surround yourself with like-minded friends, practice self-care by taking care of your physical appearance and mental health and finally forgive those who have hurt you and yourself for those you have hurt in the past.
