Causes A number of internal and external factors contribute to the visible signs of ageing of our skin. The widely accepted theory of the skin ageing process is that free radicals or Oxidative stress produce abnormal cells.
These alter the DNA eventually causing cellular demise. Over time the texture of the skin changes. Firmness is compromised and lines appear in the surface.
Extrinsic factors which cause oxidative stress include: pollution, UV rays, stress, X rays, alcohol and drugs. Intrinsic factors, such as inflammation and other metabolic processes, also produce free radicals.
Treatment Antioxidants are considered to be the mainstay of treatments which have the power to reduce the effects of free radicals on healthy cells. Vitamins A, C and E are commonly used in skincare for their antioxidant effect.
As our skin ages, it lacks the moisture that it once had. For certain Ayurvedic skin types, and particularly those with a Vata dosha whose skin already leans towards dryness, this can be particularly problematic. People with Vata dosha have to think carefully about ways that they can keep their dosha in balance as they age in order to minimize the signs of premature ageing.
