Our Top 5 FAQs

We are often asked questions by you, our discerning customers, about what we are, and why we do some of the things we do in our products, packaging etc. This month, we address our Top 5 ‘frequently asked questions’.

What are cosmeceuticals?

The term ‘cosmeceutical’ was coined in 1980 by the dermatologist, Dr. Albert Kligman. Cosmeceutical is a combination of the words cosmetic and pharmaceutical, meaning that the product contains active ingredients which have a biological effect; for example reducing the appearance of wrinkles or lightening skin pigmentation. We know that through Ayurveda, Mother Natures has provided us with some amazing, potent and effective active ingredients, and AWE encapsulates these to deliver your skin optimal health…naturally!

What does Retinol do?

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. Unlike many vitamins, vitamin A must go through metabolic processes before it is converted into the useable form of retinoic acid in the skin. Retinoic acid has been found beneficial in the treatment of acne, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles and evening out skin tone. Retinol is sensitive to sunlight and can therefore be unstable in some formulations. At AWE cosmeceuticals we use retinol in an encapsulated form to protect the integrity of the ingredient. Retinol has a better conversion rate into retinoic acid than retinyl palmitate. It is also important to know the concentration of retinol in a product as small amounts are unlikely to convert to adequate amounts of retinoic acid for real results.

How often should I exfoliate?

Skin cells turnover (exfoliate) approximately every 28 days. Young skin has a higher turnover rate and as we age our skin turns over more slowly, often resulting in a dull complexion due to the build-up of dead skin cells. Exfoliation helps to remove excess skin cells, which may also cause congestion of the pores. We recommend exfoliating with once per week (two at a maximum) for optimal skin health.

Why airless pumps?

AWE Cosmeceuticals source packaging with every type of wastage in mind – no additional/unnecessary packaging and no wastage of product left in the packaging. At AWE, we select airless pumps for most of our products. AWE Cosmeceuticals uses a natural preservative system and airless bottles help to ensure the active ingredients are protected from exposure to air, sunlight and fingers that can in some cases allow bacteria to breed and also affect the efficacy of the product. Not only that, airless packaging is designed like a vacuum meaning that you’ll get out every last drop of the product, with nothing wasted! And of course, all AWE packaging is 100% recyclable.

Can natural skincare really be effective?

Consider this…even two ‘natural’ ingredients can still have a reaction with each other – just think of oil and water and the way they naturally separate when combined.

Whilst natural is often a definite positive, it’s important to remember that not all natural ingredients are necessarily ‘good’ for your skin, whilst not all synthetic ones are can be deemed ‘bad’. Combining the best of both to work in synergy for the most complimenting ‘effect’ for you and your skin, is what it’s all about. As with everything else, in life ‘all things in moderation’ applies but empowerment to know where you stand with your skin care is a MUST! Read more here.
