Pigmentation Skin Care

Pigmentation, unlike a tan, results in areas of skin discolouration, such as freckles, solar lentigines (known most commonly as ‘age spots’) and melasma or hormonally related pigmentations (sometimes referred to as ‘pregnancy mask’). Pigmentation skin carePigmentation is the result of melanin production in our skin. Normal melanin production is needed to protect our living skin cells from the harmful effects of UV rays and inflammatory responses. Melanin over production can be stimulated by: • UV exposure; • Hormonal factors (e.g. pregnancy, contraceptive pill); • Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (such as pimples leaving darkened areas of skin); and • Photosensitising drugs which cause pigmentation as a side effect. Pigmentation can be difficult to erase and often requires topical application of effective lightening agents. Often clients will resort to harsh clinic based peels or laser treatments. Sun block is the single most important factor in reducing and suppressing further melanin production on a day to day basis. Recommended pigmentation skin care products: Lightening SerumRenewal System, Skin Polish
